Jaelee had been complaining about her stomach hurting for an entire morning. I thought it might be gas, constipation or a bladder infection. When she started to get a fever and lay hunched over in pain I thought it was time we take her to the doctor. I called our regular doctors office and made an appointment for her. Since I didn’t think it was anything major I asked Greg if he could take her while I continued to get ready for a birthday party. Greg called me after the doctors appointment to tell me that they were sending him and Jaelee to the ER. They were concerned that she had appendicitis. I immediatly got Jayse and met Greg at the ER.
Jaelee was really sleepy and just wanted to be held and go to sleep. We didn’t have to wait too long before we were in a room. They got an IV in her and took her blood. Once she was relaxed I told Greg to take Jayse home so they could eat some lunch and I told him I would call him if anything came up. A couple hours after he left the doctor came in and told me they were going to transport Jaelee by an ambulance to the ER downtown to so that we could meet with a pediatric surgeon to discuss our options for surgery because they thought there was a large possibility it was her appendix. I called Greg to tell him the latest and just broke down, the possibility of her having surgery was scary. He said to let him know when we were on our way downtown and he would meet us there. While we were waiting for the ambulance they gave her some morphine for the pain, she ended up having a local reaction to it and they just kept a close eye on her arm and later but a red band on her that said morphine and told me that they were going to update her charts to say she was allergic to it. After several more hours we were finally in the ambulance on our way downtown.
The surgeon was there waiting for us and examined Jaelee right away. It took him less than 5 minutes to determine that it was not her appendix. He had a pediatric doctor come in and examine her to find out what was causing the fever and stomach pains. He told us that she had gastroenteritis, which is basically a viral infection in the stomach and small intestines very similar to the stomach flu. I was so relived to find out it was not appendicitis. The doctor gave her some milk of magnesia and some Tylenol and sent us on our way. It was a scary experience but in the end I am so glad it was just a stomach bug.
