Tonsil and Adenoid Surgery

The kids had been getting strep throat about every other week from early November to December.  Our doctor finally recommended us to a specialist and within 5 minutes of looking at the kids throats he said they both needed their tonsils and adenoids removed.  He wanted to do it as soon as possible since they had been sick so much.  It was scheduled 2 weeks from our initial visit with the specialist.

The day before their surgery we wanted them to eat their favorite food since they wouldn’t be eating solid food for a while.  We had pizza and invited Darin and his family over.  The morning of the surgery they could not have any food or liquids after 9 am.  They were able to have jello in the morning and that was it.  Greg told me he had to go to work early in the morning to work on something.  When he came back he had an elliptical for me.  I have been wanting one for months.  He found this one in someones yard with a free sign on it.  It was broken but he was able to fix it and it works great!  The kids love it, it’s like a fun toy for them.

While we were getting ready the hospital called and said they were running ahead of schedule and could we get there as soon as possible.  W e rushed out.  When we got to the hospital we had to wait upstairs in the lobby for registration.  For some reason it was super slow and we ended up sitting there for an hour.  By the time we went to surgery they still were trying to have us hurry but then we ended up sitting in the pre-surgery room for another hour.  While there we had the kids work on homework that their teacher gave us to help them not get behind in school.  They were also able to decorate and chose a smell for their face mask.  We had watched a pre-surgery video before the surgery so they were excited to decorate the masks like they saw in the video.

Jayse was the first one to leave for surgery.  As they wheeled him out he looked scared to death but did really well and went off by himself. The surgery went really fast.  They were back in about 20 minutes to get Jaelee.  When they wheeled her away she was laughing and excited.

When we left to go to the lobby they already had Jayse ready for us to go back to post-op.  When we got back there he was awake and crying.  He calmed down quickly and drank some juice.  The first thing he said was Where’s Jaelee?  I thought it was so cute he thought about her.  Jaelee was done with her surgery in about 20 minutes and they rolled her in to a room next to Jayse.  I went in there and sat with her until she woke up and Greg stayed with Jayse.  When Jayse was able to drink enough juice they said he was ready to go.  Greg got him ready and then they came over to Jaelee’s room.  When she woke up she cried for a bit and then wanted a popsicle.  The first thing she said as well was Where’s my brother?  They have a bond that is super strong and I love it.  I hope recording moments like this will remind them of that, cuz we all know what happens when they become teens.

Once Jaelee had drank enough juice and had a popsicle she was ready to go too.  They saw on the video we watched about surgery that at the end they got to ride in a wheel chair.  They were so excited about it.  They had wheeled a wagon into the room for them to ride in but Jaelee made sure she got her wheelchair ride.  They squished into the wheel chair together and enjoyed their ride to the car.

When we left the hospital Greg and I were starving so we went to chic-fil-a and got some food.  The kids were hungry too but we had plenty of soft stuff for them to eat at home.  The morning before their surgery Greg ran the kids over to Hastings to buy the new Hero 6 movie.  So when we got home they had a new movie to watch.  When we got home they ate several bowls of ice cream and watched Big Hero 6.  After that they were running around the house like crazy people.  Their pain meds must of been good.  We had to keep telling them to stop running around, get off the elliptical and just relax.
