In early November Jayse had a speech videofluoroscopy. We needed this done for his upcoming surgery. It was going to determine how much and what was needed. It is basically a video x-ray that shows how his palate moves during speech. It was pretty neat, he had this white chalky substance inserted into his nose and that allowed the x-ray to see how it traveled through.
We could see right away that Jayse’s palate was not covering the back of his throat when he spoke. This was allowing his speech to escape up through his nose, so when he talked his speech sounded nasally. We could also see all his teeth, the ones he has now and his adult teeth. It was pretty cool to see how your tongue and palate moves as well during speech.
The speech pathologist was a really nice lady. After the speech videofluoroscopy she told Jayse he’d done such a good job that she had a special gift for him in her office. We followed her upstairs to her office where she had a bin full of toys. She let him pick 1. I can’t tell you how awesome that was. She made him feel so special and he talked about it for weeks. It’s so nice to encounter someone that makes your kid feel special like that when he’s going through so much.
