Our 2nd day and last in San Diego we got up had some breakfast and headed to tour the USS Midway, aircraft carrier. Ryan thought it would only take us an hour or so but it was really interesting and informative and we spent quit a few hours there. I had a great time looking at the airplanes and listening through my audio tour guide. They had some of the pilots talking about their experience. I loved it.
It was really interesting going in the boat and seeing the kitchens, eating areas, the hospital and dentist. It is amazing what it takes to run a ship like that. Makes you really appreciate it. I think in one of the recordings it said they made 10,000 meals a day!
After the USS Midway we walked to Kansas City BBQ for lunch. It’s where bar scenes from the movie Top Gun were filmed. It was pretty fun, they had a lot of top gun paraphernalia and pictures of where portions of the movie were filmed. The best part though was a guy who walked in as Tom Cruise. He had his mannerisms and laugh down. I heard someone ask one of the waitresses if they pay him to come in and she said no he just comes in when he sees the place full. He was pretty hilarious and we all got a picture with him. Infact he came up to Brandi and I had asked if we wanted a picture and said they were free. We said why not and got a picture with him as well. It was pretty hilarious.
As we walked back to our cars parked at the USS Midway we stopped to look at this giant statue of a kissing couple and there was a guy blowing huge bubbles for kids to play in and a couple guys dressed in silver/gold doing robot moves.
Brandi and her family had to take off since they had a 5 hour drive ahead of them. I had a few hours before my flight took off so I headed over to Coronado Island. I parked next to the hotel and walked down to the beach. There was a guy there making these amazing sand sculptures. I heard him mention each one took him 11 hours. That is commitment. I walked around the hotel grounds and it was beautiful, it would be a really fun place to stay at some day.
After walking the grounds of the hotel I had to head to the airport. I needed to find a gas station to fill up the rental car but that was pretty difficult. I ended up going way out of the way. Then my phone was about dead and I was worried I’d lose my navigation. I stopped at a small gas station and filled up and bought a phone charger. Then I had a hard time finding the rental car return place. The gps kept taking me away from the airport towards downtown. After circling the airport a few times and following the signs I finally found where I was going and returned the car. It was smooth sailing home after that. It was a great trip and one I’m glad I got to do but I am always happy to be home with my family.
