On Thursday the girls went on a tour of the Umpqua lighthouse. The boys stayed back to play video games. The lighthouse tour was really fun. It was a bit rainy and cold out while we toured the outside but the lighthouse and the museum was really pretty neat. The older I get the more stuff like this interests me. It is fascinating to hear the history and image how the people lived. The families that ran the lighthouse were basically on their own. They raised their own food and home schooled their kids. They would get supplies from San Francisco via boat twice a year. They had to rely on each other quit a bit.
Just thinking about how the Fresnel lens got there from France in the 1890’s is hard to wrap my head around, not to mention creating that 100 ft tower by hand! I thought it was really interesting that each lighthouse has it’s own light pattern. This one has a red light, 2 white lights and then 5 seconds of nothing. Each lighthouse is different so if you’re lost at sea and are near a lighthouse you can tell the coast guard where you are by the pattern. Also when we saw how little the actual light was and to think about how far you can see the light is amazing. It’s all because of how that Fresnel lens was designed to refract light.
The museum was great as well. It had a lot of information about the lighthouse and the coast guard. It was really neat to walk around. The gift shop below had some really nice pieces to, that we all ended up leaving with.
Jaelee and I go to this lighthouse for our cupcakes at sunset every year it was really cool to actually go inside of it this time and learn about it.
Back at home the boys were fine playing video games. The girls made chocolate covered marshmallow eggs with Grandma. Man those things were delicious. I ate so many of them. Chocolate covered marshmallows are one of my favorite candies.
Rocks the girls painted the day before.

Oh hey, there’s the boys. That’s Jayse hiding under his blanket.
