Jayse’s First Deer

Jayse got his first deer this year. Greg had taken him out of school for 2 days to go camping and hunting. They didn’t even see a deer. I didn’t get many details from the trip but I guess they had a good time despite not seeing any animals.

Greg’s friend that went with them went out with another hunter and shot a deer within 20 minutes just days later. Greg went out a few more times with out Jayse but didn’t see any deer again. They finally decided to get the boat out so they could go across the lake and try to hunt in another spot.

They left early in the morning, it happened to be a really cold day and it was forecast to have snow. They got to where they wanted to drive the boat across and made it to where they wanted to be pretty early. They had a pretty step climb up hill but within 20 minutes of climbing they spotted a deer. Greg had Jayse get in position, put the scope on the deer and when he thought he had a shot he told him to take it. Jayse did and with 1 shot he got his first deer. They said it was a pretty crappy walk up to the deer, it was snowing and the ground was muddy. Greg walked behind Jayse kind of pushing up the hill. By the time they got to the deer it was almost completely covered in snow.

Greg’s friend – Greg was going to help get the deer down but as he was heading down he lost his grip on the deer and it went tumbling and sliding down the hill. It was at the bottom waiting for them. Kinda worked out if you ask me.

When they got to the boat of course it would not start, Greg yanked on it and worked on it for a while to get it going. In the end they ended up having to paddle back. He said his arms were sore the next day.

When they got home I asked Jayse about shooting his first deer, he just seemed unemotional about it all. He didn’t seem excited and had no emotion about killing something. He said it was kinda like his video games where you look at something through the scope and just shoot it.

It sounds like it was memorable though and something he and his dad will always remember. I know both Greg and I were proud of him.

I wanted to record Greg & Jayse re-telling their time, Greg was not feeling it and had Jayse talk about it. It’s not the best description, when Greg retold me what happened he had much more detail but here is a video in Jayse’s own words of his experience.
