On Wednesday we had our day scheduled to go to the Colosseum. It wasn’t until the afternoon so as we made our way there we went to the Pantheon & Trevi Fountain.

The Pantheon is a former Roman temple and since the year 609 a Catholic church. It is one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings, in large part because it has been in continuous use throughout its history. At the center of the ceiling is an opening (oculus) to the sky. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon’s dome is still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome. I was just amazed at how nice the flooring looked after all these years with the rain and snow coming in from the opening.

Not sure what this building was but it was very pretty and we saw it on our way to the Trevi Fountain from the Pantheon.
The Trevi Fountain. One of the most famous fountains in the world. It was much much bigger than I thought it would be. It is huge! We were so lucky we went to Rome in the off season because this place would of been packed regularly. It was not too busy and we were able to get up and close.
In the center of the fountain is Oceanus a titan in Greek mythology. Abundance is to his left and Salubrity to his right. And in the front are a couple of tritons and horses.
It is said that if you throw a coin into the fountain you are sure to return. It’s estimated $1.5 million in coins are thrown into the fountain a year. The money is used to donate food to the needy.

At the top of the fountain is the papal coat of arms, which we saw all over Rome. We found out when we went to the Vatican from our guide what it meant. At the top is the popes crown or tiara with 2 keys. One gold and one silver. It represents that the pope has both the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth.
Another couple of faces I thought was kinda creepy looking.
We stopped in a coffee/pastry shop and tried a few things. This was pretty good but a lot of their pastries have nutella in them and I like nutella but not that much.
