Eagle Tree

My friend Greg and I went to Wendall to find a tree where 100s of eagles are. They come through during the winter and are only there in January and February.

Wendall is about 2 hours away from here. We left in the morning and got there before lunch. Right as we got off the freeway there was an eagle right next to my car. It was flying right next to me. I was like this is going to be awesome, we already saw one!

The eagle was so far away. I zoomed out so you could see just how small it actually was.

We found the tree but only saw one eagle in it. That was a disappointment. We thought maybe we found the wrong one. I had read there was another tree by a dairy. We decided to try and find it. Never did.

There was a small restaurant by the tree, we figured we’d go there for lunch. While there the waitress told us that we were in the right spot but the eagles don’t really come in until dusk and when they do it’s like an airport where they just start flying in one by one. She said they go down to the river during the day to fish.

While driving around we’d seen a sign and parking lot for Box Canyon State Park. We thought we’d go back after lunch and walk around. As we were walking down the path a couple of ladies told us they’d seen eagles in the lower canyon diving and getting fish. We were like yes! That’s exactly what we want.

It was a beautiful walk along the ridge of the canyon. We saw some eagles far off but never real close. We saw a rock chuck and got good pictures of it. There was beautiful blue water below. We kept walking and walking hoping to see eagles in the river. We never did see them. We went pretty far and then turned around. It was quite the walk!

We had decided we were going to stay until dusk to see all the eagles in the tree. We found a sign for Ritter Island and decided to check it out to kill more time until dusk. So glad we did! On the way there we saw pheasants, other birds and deer. When we got to Ritter Island it was a waterfall. We couldn’t believe our luck and all we had got to see. Pictures do not do this justice, it was beautiful.

We headed back towards the eagle tree before dusk and already there were a bunch more eagles around. By the time dusk hit sure enough they just kept flying in. There wasn’t one tree with a whole bunch but a whole group of trees. Each with more then a dozen eagles in it. They were everywhere. 100’s! It was so cool. It was hard to drive away. We just kept taking pictures.

It was so cool, glad we were able to go there and find the eagles. Thankful for a friend that will do these crazy things with me.
