Alaska Cruise – Day 7

Day seven of our Alaskan cruise was a whirlwind of activities, from breaking records to marveling at nature’s icy wonders. Each moment was filled with excitement and awe as we sailed through the scenic College Fjord, ending the day with a spectacular variety show and a race against an incoming storm to reach port.

We started our day with a hearty breakfast, fueling up for the adventures ahead. The anticipation for the day’s events was palpable, especially with the unique opportunity to participate in a Guinness World Record attempt.

Steve, Jaelee, Jayse, and I joined a pizza party organized by the cruise to set the record for the largest pizza party at sea. The atmosphere was lively, with everyone eager to contribute to this fun challenge. We each received two square slices of pizza but had to wait before eating them. When the signal was given, we all ate our pizza simultaneously, making history together. After the party, we left to find Greg and LaRee, who were engrossed in an ice carving demonstration.

The ice carving was impressive, showcasing the skill and precision of the artist as they transformed a block of ice into a stunning sculpture of a bear. After pizza, Jaelee and I treated ourselves to some ice cream we’d been eyeing for days. The glass cups were adorned with chocolate and sprinkles, filled with rich, creamy ice cream that was as delicious as it looked. Despite the pizza and ice cream, we were still decided to have a proper lunch, laughing at our insatiable appetites.

While enjoying lunch, I noticed the increasing presence of icebergs, signaling our approach to the glaciers. I quickly went to grab more clothes and my camera, preparing for the chilly deck. In my absence, the rest of the group spotted seals lounging on an iceberg. Jaelee captured some great photos of these adorable creatures, adding to our collection of wildlife sightings.

Our sea day took us through the breathtaking College Fjord, home to numerous glaciers. Each one was stunning, but the massive Hubbard Glacier was the star of the show: it’s more than six miles wide where it meets the ocean and it’s face is up to 400 feet tall. We were fortunate to witness some calving, where chunks of ice break off and fall into the sea. The thunderous sound echoed across the fjord, and I managed to capture a photo of the splash and a video of a piece falling off, preserving the awe-inspiring moment.

Around minute 1.37 of this video you can see a small chunk fall off, just to the right of the big blue portion on the left side. You have to look close.

After spending time marveling at the glaciers, our captain announced that we needed to reach the port in Whittier quickly due to an approaching storm. The ship accelerated, and the journey became quite rocky. Despite the rough seas, we were able to enjoy our last show in the theater. It was a variety show featuring all the singers and dancers, a fitting finale to our onboard entertainment.

We made it to Whittier just in time, safely docking. Exhausted but exhilarated from the day’s adventures, we had a good night’s rest, ready for the next leg of our Alaskan journey. Day seven was a perfect blend of record-setting fun, delicious treats, and awe-inspiring natural beauty, leaving us with unforgettable memories.
