Outhouse Build – Weekend Two

Greg and I went out to our property with more supplies for the bathhouse with the hope of finishing it up. Since Jaelee had a track meet Friday night Greg couldn’t go out early. Him and I went out there on Saturday together. We planned to stay the night and work some more on Sunday.

It was in the forecast to rain most of Saturday and it sure did. It rained on us all morning until about 2. Because of the rain we decided to put the roof on first thing so while we were working on the build we’d have some coverage. We needed to put some purlins in the roof so we had something to attach the roof panels too. Greg cut and installed those while I documented it πŸ˜‰ While he was up on the ladder I helped lift the roof panels up for him install. We learned that even though the panels said they were 8 feet, they are not. They were short. There was probably a 6 inch gap between the end of the panel and the wood we have framed out on the end. Greg ended up just cutting a life edge piece of wood and putting it on the end. It looks really good and I like that extra touch. It was nice to have it covered. It was very relaxing to see and hear the rain dropping on the clear plastic panels.

Greg started working on framing out the windows. I worked on getting all the plastic wrap off of them. It was a pain. Once we got the framing up we started putting up more boards on the siding. This time we kept everything up by the sawmill and only brought down material after it was cut. This was so much easier. Greg stayed up by the sawmill cut the material. I would go up get the material, walk back down to the outhouse and put it up. Rinse and repeat. I started with the middle portion because it was under the roof. We were trying to pick some of the pieces we’d milled that weren’t perfect. We want to save those for the cabin. Some of the pieces had an uneven edge. I put them together as close as I could. Once we got into that rhythm things started to go pretty fast. When it was all up there were some areas I thought still had a pretty large gap so I took scrap pieces and cut those up and covered some of the larger gaps. Because we are using green material still there may end up being more gaps when the wood dries I’ll have to go back in and cover. I learned on a YouTube video when you are using green lumber to lay it down a certain way so if it curls it curls into the piece it’s attached to and not away from. I checking every piece I put on to make sure I was putting it on correct.

We took a break for lunch. Greg’s specialty while we are out there is a PB&J sandwich, LOL. Every time we are there and I ask what’s for lunch he says a PB&J. I’ve upgraded our lunches a few times with some bagel sandwiches. He made some coffee and I made myself a big glass of hot chocolate to get warmed up. We were pretty soaked. Luckily while we were eating lunch the rain almost stopped. I took off a layer as did Greg and we left them in the camper to dry.

We got right back to work. After lunch we finished the siding, got the windows in and Greg made me some shelves. I got my accessories out and put them all in. At that point we called it a day. I got my big camera and took some pictures and then we cleaned up.

Because we used trees for the poles they were not exactly straight. The one on the left corner leaned out so we had to cut those boards a bit longer to reach and attach.

You can see on the back here where I put some extra boards on to cover some larger gaps.

Sunday Greg didn’t want to work on the outhouse anymore. He wanted to get back to milling. We used up a lot of the lumber we had milled. I decided to finish my toilet. I just needed to cover it. I cut pieces out of the shower curtain I bought and attached it to the toilet with a stapler. I had to take a good amount of it apart to cover it but I managed it all. Afterwards, I wanted to get the lower portion of the door done. So I did it all by myself. Figured out the design, cut the material and installed it. It was heavy with that wet lumber so Greg did have to help me bring it down to the outhouse and help me install the hinges and latch. Once the toilet was in and half the door on I had to go back and take more pictures.

I helped Greg mill up a few more logs and then we called it a day. We didn’t get home until 6 that night – and still had to make dinner for everyone. Adulting is so fun sometimes. LOL. At least we had a great weekend together and an awesome bathhouse to show for it.

I didn’t take a lot of pictures during the process, mostly took video. I didn’t get any of a huge chunk because I was just too busy doing things but I got plenty when we were done.

I’ve had this watering can. I brought it out here to use to help flush #2 down the diverter.
