Grandpa

I’ve been struggling with whether or not to write about my grandpa’s passing. In the end I wanted to write about him and use this as a place to write down my memories and pictures of him. He was the only grandpa I ever had or knew. My sister and I spent many summers at my grandparents house and even lived with them for a little bit when I was in the 6th grade.

My grandpa was a hard working man, he built many homes in Idaho and we found out at the funeral, him and his dad even built the church we were at. For most of my childhood I remember him working at his property management business. We would go with him and my grandma to clean apartments and houses to get them ready for new renters. My grandpa would mow the lawns and my sister and I would help my grandma clean. My grandpa drove an old I believe Toyota truck that was orange. Maybe it was a ford because that’s the only car I remember them driving. In fact they had a blue ford tempo and the license plate was something CPU, we thought that was so funny that their license plate said P-U!

My grandpa was famous for his fudge and peanut brittle. Towards his later years in life I would ask him to make it and he would complain it took too long, LOL. Luckily at his funeral we all got to have some as my Aunt and Uncle made a whole bunch!

I have very fond memories of my grandparents house. They had an unfinished basement that my sister and I loved to go explore in. We would rummage through my grandparents things all packed down there, it was like a treasure hunt. My grandparents were also one of the first people I know who had a computer. I remember playing countless hours on the computer playing the Oregon Trail and Wheel of Fortune. This was back when computers only had one color on the screen, remember that green? One of the best things about the basement was the carpeted stairs that led down to them. We would get a slick sleeping bag, get in it and slide down the stairs crashing into the wall.

During the middle of my sixth grade school year my parents decided to move from Utah back to Idaho. I didn’t want to leave my school in the middle so my sister and I moved in with our grandparents to finish out the year. That is one of the best times I can remember as a kid. My grandma, who didn’t and still doesn’t drive much would pick us up from school. We would get home and it seemed like every day we would get to walk to the local Kings and pick out candy. This Kings was such a cool store. It had a toy section in the basement and the candy aisle was enormous. I am forever grateful for that time with them.

My grandpa was always a quiet man but as he got older he seemed to be happy to just sit back and take everything in watching his family. My family gets together every year for a family reunion. Some of those reunions are the fondest memories I have of summer break. We went to Lagoon, camping and even all drove across the US after my grandparents served a mission in Maryland. We met them in Missouri. We’ve been to renaissance fairs and have dressed up as movie stars. Something I’m sure we will continue to do for many years.

Greg and I were lucky enough to go to Alaska with my grandparents on a trip we will never forget. And in his last month as his health started to decline I am forever grateful that the kids and I went out there to visit them and get one last picture. Priceless.

I’ve gathered as many photos of my grandpa as I could find. I have some more that are on film negatives, I found 1 place that will convert them to digital files for me. I’ll add those and more as I come across them.

My sister wrote a very good blog post about my grandpa’s funeral and added some of the pictures I took if you want to read about that https://weberfamilysite.wordpress.com/2017/01/28/my-grandpas-funeral/
