Jaelee’s First Track Meet

Jaelee decided this spring to try track. Her good friend Addy was doing it as well. It was kinda last minute thing, track had already started and they were asking for more kid so she just jumped in. She decided to do shot put and discus like her dad.

For her first track meet we met her at the school where the meet was. Her school was WAY late because they have a shortage of bus drivers right now so the driver had to take kids to another sport come back and pick up the track team and then get them to their meet. So once they got there they all got a quick warm up and then it was time to go.

I had been to track meets briefly in high school so I didn’t know what to expect. It was soooo long! Oh my gosh! I had to admit I was bored out of my mind. Not of course while Jaelee was doing her thing but that is only a few minutes and the rest of the time is spent waiting for her next event. And then they all have to practice a bit before that.

While she was warming up and practicing Greg did go over and give her some pointers. Her coach is not exactly a track super star like her dad. He is the spanish/guitar/orchestra teacher that just volunteers to help track. And the other volunteers helping didn’t even know how to measure the throwing distances so Greg and another dad had to help get them on the right track for that too.

For Jaelee’s first track meet and only a couple weeks of practice she did really great. She placed 3rd overall! I’m really proud of that girl for trying something new and doing great. She seemed very committed to it. Her and Greg would practice at home and she’d come home from track practice every day and talk with Greg all about what she learned.
