Last Band Concert

I’ve been dreading writing about this because I don’t want it to be over.

There are some activities as a parent that you enjoy because your child enjoys them, and then there are the ones that become part of who your family is. Band has been that for us.

Jaelee has been playing since 7th grade, and over the years we’ve watched countless performances. Concerts at the Morrison Center. Performances back at her old middle school school. Her bandmates Jazz Band at the Jump. Marching band games under the Friday night lights, and eventually on the blue turf at Boise State. We even traveled to watch her perform in other states. Somewhere along the way, band became one of my favorite parts of the school year.

So walking into her final concert, I knew it would be emotional.

The opening piece, October, was absolutely beautiful. Before I knew it, tears were streaming down my face. It wasn’t just the music—it was everything it represented. Six years of rehearsals, early mornings, football games, competitions, concerts, friendships, and memories were coming to an end.

One of my favorite traditions at the final concert is recognizing the seniors. Each one comes forward to receive a handshake or hug from the band director while their answers are read aloud—what they plan to do after high school, their favorite band memories, and the advice they’d give to the underclassmen. It’s such a simple tradition, but it’s incredibly meaningful. It’s a chance to celebrate not just the musicians they’ve become, but the young adults they’re growing into.

I’m so incredibly proud of Jaelee. Band has taught her discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and confidence. More than that, it gave her a place to belong and friendships that I hope will last a lifetime.

As much as I’m sad this chapter has ended, I hope it isn’t the end of music for her. Whether it’s joining a community band, playing just for herself, or finding another way to keep music in her life, I hope she continues. It would be a shame to leave behind something that has brought so much beauty—not only to her life, but to ours as well.

Thank you, Jaelee, for six wonderful years of music. They are memories I’ll carry with me forever.

There are a number of students Jaelee’s been in band with since 7th grade. Mark is one of them.

Jaelee’s senior spotlight

It’s tradition for the seniors to sing the Alama Mater.

There last song together.
